Car Accident Kindness

Real life story of what you should do, from a friend of mine.

A friend of mine stopped by the office yesterday morning. He was in an interesting mood because he was literally just read-ended on the i15 freeway on his was to see me. ===== pajama drive update at the end ====

We are entering car accident season. This is the time of extra crazy, in a hurry drivers, and likely snow. My friend happens to be a personal injury lawyers assistant. He knows a lot about car accidents.

Here is the scenario:

Traffic on the freeway came to a super abrupt stop.

He told me he stopped his truck about 12 inches from the next car in front of him. He looked in his rear view mirror and saw this young kid looking up just in time to hit his hitch on the back of his truck. Guess why he was looking up? He was on his phone.

My friend didn’t even feel the impact because he was in a big truck. This kids car was likely totaled.

This kid was 16 and had his license for one month and 2 days. My friend had a lot of sympathy for him so he gave him a choice. You need to remember this.

If you are in an accident, you need to do one of two things.

  1. Call the police …or

  2. Get a video of the other person admitting guilt and taking responsibility.

Being the kind person my friend is, he had the kid call his parents and shoot a video of him admitting fault. I saw the video. This saved the kid from getting a police citation on his record.

The other smart thing he did was to get the kids phone number and tested it by texting him while they were standing together. That way you know you have a good number.

Why do this?

Since my friends job is working with accident attorneys, he has seen time and time again the dishonesty of people. Once they are away from the scene, they will change their story and deny everything. Sadly, you can’t trust people anymore to always do the right thing. If you don’t protect yourself with video or a police report, you might be left holding the bag for all your injuries and car damage.
