Advice to my younger self

One great advantage of seeing a wide variety of patients, is the wide variety of lessons I get to learn and pass on.

Lets start with the young person lesson. This patient was referred in after a car accident. He has some significant injuries and a lawyer. But…he made some critical mistakes.

#1 He didn’t have car insurance. (slap fore head here). Since he has a lawyer it might have been ok….but.

#2 After the investigation, it turns out he is at fault. Double Uh oh. Now the lawyer can’t help him.

Here is the lesson in a nut shell. You need to have car insurance and as high a PIP (Personal Injury Protection) as possible. The reason, even if it was his fault, he would have Chiro/ medical/ PT/ Massage, etc… coverage. In Utah, the state minimum is $3000, but you should raise it to at least $10,000. The best part is it only costs a few dollars a month to do that.

I feel really bad for this kid. He is in his early 20’s and now is at fault for the totaling of another car and the other person’s injuries.

The next patient I saw is north of 65 years old.

This person is fairly healthy overall and has been doing natural health for more than 30 years. There is one little caveat that has brought this person in.

Constant neck pain

This person was just rolling over in bed and “boom” —-pain. Why does that happen? Is the pillow dangerous? No, it was chronic lower neck deterioration over 30-40 years judging by the bone spurring and the loss of disc height.

So… when this person was a lot younger the many sports injuries and car accidents are now catching up.

When you are in your 20’s, you don’t feel those injuries that much or for that long.

Without going to a chiropractor when you are younger, that deterioration can go unchecked for decades. Why? The easiest reason is that the inner parts of the disc in between the bones doesn’t have pain nerves. Until things get bad enough, you won’t feel it until one day you are rolling over and suddenly get pain.

The lesson here is not to wait to get your spine checked out. A chiropractor can feel a problem before you feel the pain. It’s similar to a dentist looking at a xray and seeing a cavity that doesn’t hurt yet.
